A Dream in Blue Tulle

Colour wedding dresses are becoming more and more popular for the bride who wants to stand out and express their individuality on their wedding day. Linsay’s favourite colour is blue and she knew the exact shade of blue she wanted for her dream wedding dress.

Linsay had a picture of her dress in her head and it was definitely a little extra! She had gone to a few bridal shops to try on. None of the shops stocked what she was looking for. She contacted me after seeing the tiered tulle dresses and delicate lace bridal bodices from my collection and we hit it off immediately. We initially had a chat over zoom to discuss what she was looking for. I then sketched some different designs and we agreed on the final design below.

The final design comprised of four separate pieces including a blue short underlay dress with hand sewn lace applique, a delicate blue lace overlay bodice with a high collar and long sleeves, a HUGE multi tiered tulle skirt with a long train, and a shorter, lighter version of this for the evening dancing.

The ‘Toiling’ Process

Once Linsay’s measurements were taken the ‘toiling’ process could begin. This involves hand drafting patterns for each piece based on Linsay’s personal measurements, then sewing up a calico or cotton mock up to get the fit right. When there is a style feature such as a sweetheart neckline I usually draw this directly onto the toile on the body, then transfer it back to the original patterns. There was a few fitting appointments at this stage to get everything just right!

Exquisite Craftmanship: The Muli-Tiered Tulle Skirt

To create the skirt I first had to get the A-line shape and length of the train right. You can see the first stages of this in the image of the toile above. Linsay wanted a particular shade of light powder blue. We managed to find the right shade in satin but it took a while for me to source the right shade in tulle! The satin was used as an underskirt to create a base and help with the colour. The next layer was a stiff tulle with horsehair braid or crinoline to keep the shape. The many many metres of gathered tulle layers were then stitched to this layer. The skirt was so heavy I also had to integrate a petticoat under the the lining which created the most gorgeous swishing noise when Linsay moved in it.

Elegance in Lace

Although I absolutely love the tulle skirt, my favourite piece is the intricate lace bodice. I just feel it gives the overall look a high end feel. The bodice is constructed from a delicate embroidered light blue lace that includes a fine filgiree metal thread outling and is overlaid with sequins and beads. Featuring a high collar with hand sewn lace applique using some of the lace fabric and hand sewn satin buttons that were hand painted to match the light blue fabrics. Gathered tulle shoulder pads were inserted into the puff sleeves to add even more drama!

Versatility & Style

Lets not forget the short satin underlay dress and shorter tulle skirt that provided Linsay with different looks for the ceremony and reception! The short satin dress also had hand sewn lace applique all over it that had to be carfully placed in line with the lace on the overlay bodice. This ensured a cohesive and stunning look that can also be worn again as it’s own piece. Overall Linsay had four different looks for the day!

The Alyce Jayne Bridal Experience

Linsay, her mum Karen and I had such an amazing experience throughout this process we had so much fun! I went to Dalmeny House Hotel on the day of her wedding to help Linsay get into her dress. It was such a memorable experience for me that I will treasure forever. Thank you Linsay for trusting me with your dream dress and for allowing me to share your special day with everyone.
